Southern Utah has a rich and ancient history, the archaic hunter gather tribes wandered these areas as far back as 6000 BC, giving way to the more settled basket weaver Anasazi in about 200 - 300 AD along with what many consider to be a splinter group of the Anasazi the Parowan Fremont Indians. These tribes coexisted in Southern Utah until about. 1200 ad, from this point until about the mid 1800's the Southern Paiute tribes occupied and thrived in this area until the arrival of the Mormon Pioneers. These ancient civilizations have left a record behind of their life in Southern Utah, petroglyphs and pictoglyphs of their history can still be seen today in several state and national parks in the area. Most notable the Fremont Indian State Park along Clear Creek Canyon, Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park.
As the Mormon Pioneers settled so did the Wild West, several mining towns sprang up throughout Southern Utah some are but ghost towns now, these mining towns is where the term Wild West was born. These small mining towns where home to gambling halls, brothels and complete unlawfulness.
Along with the wild west came the outlaws, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Black Jack Ketchum and Kid Curry to name a few. Butch Cassidy was born Leroy Parker in Beaver UT. The family moved to Circleville UT. where you can still see his childhood home.
